So like I said in my previous post, I am driving down to Florida from Rhode Island, which is a loooooonnnngggg drive by any means. I wanted to break it up a little bit and decided to spend the day in Washington, D.C. I planned this part ahead of time so we could book a hotel room and such.
Today we left the hotel just after 8 a.m. and used the city's metro system to get from Silver Spring to D.C., which took a total of about 45 minutes, not too bad. The metro lets out at the Smithsonian Station right near the Smithsonian obviously. We started at the Washington Monument, its kind of hard to miss standing at 550 feet tall! I took pictures as usual and the day was slightly chilly, overcast, but still nice since there was no rain.
We walked towards the Lincoln Monument, but stopped at the World War II Memorial first. The place is beautifully designed and provides a space to respect those who serve to protect out country both then and now.

The Washington Monument and the WWII Memorial are relatively close to each other, but the Lincoln Memorial is a good half mile or so of walking along the Reflecting Pool. The walk is worth the view.
I meant the view literally. Several sets of stairs later I am standing at the Lincoln Memorial looking across the way at the Washington Monument. Pretty cool!

After the walking of the monuments, we headed to the Museum of Natural History at the Smithsonian, and if anyone plans on taking a trip there, let me tell you that one building will take nearly an entire day. We arrived at about 11 a.m. and left around 4 p.m. The place covers everything from sea creatures, our world's ecosystem, evolution of different mammals, human origins, and a whole boat load of other things too. It's CRAZY! But in a good way. Here's just a sample of the stuff I saw while visiting...

Well, its been a long day filled with new sights and memories. Tomorrow I should be back on the road and headed further south, closer to Orlando!
Have a magical day!
